The Cuisenaire rods allow children to explore quantitative patterns. For example one green rod is half of a white rod, but 10 white rods make 1 yellow rod. This means 1 white is 1/10 of 1 yellow unit but 1/2 of green unit (colors may not match). When children can see this exploration in a concrete manner, it helps immensely.
The document camera will allow me to show student work immediately. They will also be able to show concrete models of their mathematical thinking. The discussions and feedback will be more organic and genuine, keeping students more engaged in the concepts being learned.
