My students are members of the Lummi Nation. They are Pacific Northwest Natives and have a culture rich learning environment. My students are very art driven. I am completely blown away by their drawings and paintings. I feel that it is therapeutic for them. We recently watched a documentary about a young girl who was homeless. Her gift was painting. My students loved it because her story was their story in so many ways. She portrayed hope, resilience, and determination. Most of the students in my class have been homeless, separated from their parents, and lived through hardships that are just so heartbreaking. When they paint and create, I see them shine.
