Living in one of the poorest counties in Oklahoma, my students have numerous hardships to overcome. One of the biggest struggles is the lack of parental involvement. Books go home, but are never read. Papers and artwork from a week ago are still in their backpacks, or left in the hallway. It's not the kids' fault. You can only put so much responsibility on 5 and 6 year olds. In spite of it all, they come to school with a smile on their face every day, eager to learn. I think for most of them, school is their "happy place", a place where they feel safe and feel important.
