I teach a class for children on the autism spectrum who are all extremely curious, funny, energetic, and at and times very active. For the brief moments they slow down they can also be very affectionate and attentive. They all come from diverse backgrounds and family systems. My class is comprised of students who are both verbal and non-verbal and who along with their academic needs each have unique sensory/sensory motor needs. My students face unique challenges every day due to their sensory makeups, but they are all amazing, resilient and eager to learn!
Our school is located in a suburb of a major metropolitan area. Crime in the area is an all too common occurrence. Our extremely limited outdoor play space is lacking in appropriate materials to further nurture the social emotional and gross-motor development of my students.
