The majority of my students live in poverty. Most are on free and reduced lunch and often come to school without the necessary materials needed to be successful. I have spent more of my personal money on school supplies this year than I have spent on any of my 18 years in education. The school district often picks up the tab for various activities for the students as they are unable to pay for it themselves. Many come in hungry and dirty because they do not have what they need at home to meet their basic needs. They want to please their teacher and thrive on praise! Many do not have Internet at home or even electronic devices. The majority of my students have a reading level that is almost 2 -3 years behind where they should be. With all of the hardships they endure, these students are the most respectful and hardworking students I have ever met.
