I want my students to engage with language, text, storytelling, and cooperative learning. A fun, and meaningful way, I want to do this is through board games.
We know that board games tap into community-building, leadership, and healthy levels of competition through language. I worked to include games that use languages in different ways, giving students varied and complex ways to engage with them. Some games explicitly deal with words. Other games use images to solicit rich description. Playing board games can provide an informal space for students to engage with literacy, and even allow students another set of opportunities to shine and build confidence in our classroom.
