My students are seven and eight year olds from a small, breathtakingly scenic, rural town. They come to me each morning with missing-tooth smiles, warm greetings, and excited chatter. They also come to me each morning with varying needs, from different backgrounds, and with their unique personalities and learning styles. My school is tiny compared to many schools across our state and country, which makes it special in lots of ways. My students move together from grade to grade. We have one class per grade level. They know each other extremely well already. It's been a rewarding adventure and challenge for me to deeply understand this dynamic and use it to my students' advantage--pairing them in partnerships and small groups with personalities that compliment one another and push one another's learning further. Above all, my students are thinkers. They are wonderers, gigglers, friends, readers, and young minds that can and will do great things.
