The first nine-weeks of the school we will be working on poetry. I want my students to have the opportunity to read these free-verse novels in order to capture and spark their love of reading. Students will be placed in small reading groups based on interest and reading levels.
I have selected coming-of-age stories, which include historical fiction about survival, current event/immigration story, empowering girls in science and sport-themed stories. These texts are highly rated with their creative way of storytelling using poetry. These stories will also spark discussions of empathy and standing up for what is right!
I meet with reading groups once a week, but with such enriched text, I am looking forward to incorporating more activities, both independent and collaborating with peers.
