A COVID-related need in my classroom is more English language acquisition, focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I want to provide games and books for my students that target their cultural identities while providing strategic intervention in where they struggle in their English language acquisition.
The Nevada Academic Content Standards that will be promoted through this donation are the reading literature, informational reading writing, reading foundation, speaking and listening, and language standards k-5th.
Below is an example of the 1st grade standards that would be specifically targeted with the language games and diverse book choices.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.5, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.3, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.5, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.6
As you can see, these games and books hit multiple standards in every area. Not to mention the WIDA standards of reading, writing, speaking and listening. I do not want to list the standards for every grade, but Nevada standards grow from the previous year's standards. Therefore, grades 2nd-5th will benefit from just as any standard promotions.
