This year I am teaching 1st, 2nd and 6th grade students. My classroom functions as an art studio for kids. I teach via choice-based art education, which means students decide what kind of art to make by selecting their own materials, and also choose their own ideas. Students also spend time reflecting and sharing their artwork with their classmates and the school community as well.
Students learn how to set up a work space, come up with ideas, reflect on their artwork and how to work like artists! It is a great place to be, and students become very invested in their artwork and the classroom studio.
Younger students have complete control over their art process (full choice), whereas middle school starts by having modified choice. All students have access to drawing, collage, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics studios. Choice-based art education is a great way to learn (and a fun way to teach, as well!)
