I currently teach third grade to 30 very inspiring, thoughtful and vivacious students. My students come from a low income area, as over 60% of our student population is on free and reduced lunches. My students need an environment that is both inviting and homey, as many of them live in an environment that is more chaotic than calm. As an educator I feel it is my duty to provide a learning sanctuary for them.
As soon as I tell my students that we are going to be reading the first thing they ALWAYS say is "are you going to call bean bags?" I always do, but the problem is that I have four currently and they are on their last beans. To be honest they will not be around much longer as the teacher before me used them for quite awhile.
With this said, I would like to provide my students the opportunity to curl up with a good book on our new pillows, correct spelling together on our new comfy chairs and listen intently to read-aloud on our new carpet.
