My students are representative of their community, a city in California, and the world community. Some were raised within miles of our school while others have traveled 12,000 miles to live nearby. The thing they all have in common is their interest in school and their thirst for knowledge. Our school is a small public school with an enrollment of 420 students. Our students are Latino, African-American, Asian, and Pacific Islander; however, even within these ethnicities, there is much diversity. Our Latino population is from the United States, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. Our Asian students are Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Chinese, and Mien. Our Pacific-Islanders are from Tonga, Samoa, and the Philippines. Our population is truly diverse. With the diversity comes the need to master the English language and to learn in ways which often do not involve the printed word. Our students have truly benefited from the work we have done around the teaching of English Language Learners.
