I teach in a lower middle class neighborhood. Our students come from homes where both parents work sometimes multiple jobs to keep their families afloat. We have a very diverse community ethnically and this year I had students from Asia, Africa, Central and South America as well as a Native American. Our school qualifies for Title One funding intermittently. Since we did not qualify this year our operating budget is small. Our parents are very supportive of the academic program but unfortunately do not have the resources to provide the extras. This year we adopted a leadership initiative based on Steven Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. My students apply and serve in class jobs and help create and participate in programs to give back. Additionally, I serve our gifted and talented program as mentor teacher. This year a grant allowed me to take this exceptional group of students to spend the night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.
