Children need time to wonder, explore, engineer, create, and even just play. That's where morning STEM bins come in. When they enter our classroom in the morning, my first graders will be able to choose from multiple rotating morning tub activities: designing and building with various blocks and materials, fine motor activities, math games, logic puzzles, art, crafting, and many more choices.
These are some of the valuable activities which have gone by the wayside, in competition for the limited precious learning time that we have. The academic standards are rigorous, but to begin the day with a choice of fun, engaging, open-ended STEM activities is a wonderful way to warm up and provide for the peer-to-peer collaboration that is fundamental to human interaction. I have a few activities and manipulatives already, but I still need storage bins to organize them and a few more engaging materials, such as building blocks, sorting collections, puzzles, magnets, craft supplies, etc.
