Our students are classified as Emotionally Disturbed, Learning Disabled, and/or Autistic. Many of them are economically disadvantaged and are not exposed to, or provided with much opportunity to explore their community and purchase items they need to support their interests. A typical day requires engaging students academically, socially, and emotionally by forming deep relationships with them on a personal and professional level. Our students have low motivation and struggle with managing their emotions and behaviors, which significantly interfere with their academic ability and progress. Students respond well to verbal praise and positive reinforcement; however, they require highly motivating, engaging rewards to be respectful, responsible, and safe throughout the school day. The ultimate goal is for students to obtain intrinsic motivation to follow directions and complete work; however, they currently require tangible items, which will eventually be faded out to promote independence
