The students at my urban high school come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. They have varying interests and ability levels and many are reluctant readers. Some do not have the support they need at home, some are homeless, and many live in homes where education is not a priority or reading for pleasure is not the norm. They desperately need the encouragement to become independent readers, writers, and thinkers and to discover and pursue their passions.
