I refer to my students as my "kids." We work together as a family, and take many opportunities throughout the day for "family chats" to reflect on not only our learning progress, but how we treat each other. I work at a wonderful Title I school, where most of our students come from a poor socioeconomic background. Over 70% of our children receive free and reduced rate lunch. Although many of my students may not have a computer at home, they love when they are given the opportunity to use technology in the classroom.
For the upcoming 2014-2015 school year, I will be teaching a very diverse group of students. I will have both a cluster of special education students and gifted/talented students. Needless to say, I'm going to have a variety of learning needs in my classroom, but I'm looking forward to the challenge! To address their range of needs, I plan on spending most of our school day in small group instruction. My "kids" love this individualized attention, and truly benefit from it.
