My k-5th grade students are REACHing to become those stronger readers and writers. As a Reading Specialist at a Title I school, my students come to me for intense literacy intervention. They are pulled from their regular education classroom and classmates in order to receive the individual support they need in R.E.A.C.H. class. It is imperative that I create an environment in which these students get excited about coming each day. They need to know it is a safe place in which mistakes are a natural part of learning and growing. In order for these struggling readers and writers to grow, they need to have the desire to want to improve. Creating a learning environment in which these students look forward to coming each day is just as important as the intervention itself. My central focus is to provide these learners with authentic literacy support that is engaging and motivates them to persevere through their academic challenges.
