My students are English language learners in grades 1-5. These students live in an impoverished, small city school district. Their stories are all different, but they all share common threads. They are sheltered in this community. They haven't, and will most likely not have, opportunities to experience people and places first hand. In our ESL class, I try to connect them with the world around them. For example, last year we built a 9 foot tall Statue of Liberty. We couldn't afford to actually go to the statue, even though we are only 90 minutes north of NYC. So, I brought the statue to them. They love learning about new things and are so amazed about what is beyond our city limits. Oftentimes, I reflect on just how much they don't know. My wish for my students is to experience life and everything there is to offer.
