My school is located in a diverse, low-income urban community and reflect the growing diversity in the United States. 90% of the children qualify for free breakfast and lunch. It is a large elementary school serving over 600 students who are bused in from several neighboring neighborhoods. Many of their families emigrated from various parts of the world to come here for better opportunities. Most of my students speak a second language, which makes it somewhat difficult to communicate with their families. However, this does not stop them from wanting to learn to read. My students come into second grade eagerly waiting to read the chapter books that are waiting for them in the classroom library. Some of my second graders receive intervention services in order to meet their needs.
