I teach students with autism, intellectual disabilities, vision and hearing impaired. They are eager to learn new things. They are all 9th graders who are still adjusting to the transition to high school. My students require a differentiation to their instruction. This is an alternative to what is known as traditional teaching where the teacher instructs, the students take notes and take a series of formative assessments. With differentiated instruction, students learn at bites at a time. Ex: Present a student with a quarter and they call it a penny most of the time until they are able to discriminate between the two with trials. These same students may also be have forgotten what they have learned within the previous five minutes, the day before, or two days before, requiring an Extended School Year to teach skills. These same students may also require more visual communication than what we know as the traditional learning student. Textbooks are not usually the best method to teach.
