My students are first graders who are just developing their reading skills. They are just learning to read by themselves and anxious to implement the reading skills and strategies they are being taught throughout the school day. Some of them are still struggling with learning to read while others are more advanced and reading chapter books.
Our school is on the border of being a low-income school with approximately 600 students. Each first grade class averages about 24 students each year. Many of our parents are working and so don't have a lot of time to volunteer in the classroom but try to give as much as their time will allow. Learning to read and strengthening reading skills is such and important principal for our students because, as Dr. Seuss said, "The more that [they] learn, the more places [they'll] go".
