The school in which I work is the very school I attended as a child, so it holds a special place in my heart. It is located in a suburban community that consists of a diverse population. The grade levels within the school are grades three through five. The school district, like most others, is constantly cutting back on the budget, therefore, resulting in less funding to purchase the resources needed to provide effective instruction in the area of reading. As the Reading Specialist, I want to provide my students with a variety of experiences with complex text through the use of novels. So many students tell me they don't like to read. I believe in my heart that it is because they haven't had enough rich experiences with text. My job is to provide them with those experiences by consistently putting great books in their hands, so they can begin to develop a lifelong love of reading. I believe that is one of the greatest gifts I can give them as their teacher!
