A large percent of my high school students are classified as English Language Learners and require extra attention. In addition, there are a large number of at risk students who require intervention by teachers, counselors, and administrators to help them remain on track. Many of them come from troubled homes both domestic and abroad. Many cannot afford basic school supplies such as backpacks and binders. While many arise from difficult settings, I have found that my students show great resilience and potential to compete academically with students from more privileged districts.
Students at my school are often subjected to negative influences from the area and struggle to find themselves in life. I believe that these are the students who most need a special touch to prevent them from falling in with bad crowds and demonstrate their true capabilities as learners. My school has a reputation associated with the inner city but for those who truly know, they're good kids in bad situations.
