The students in my middle school classroom come from challenging backgrounds. 92% of the students in my school are at or below the poverty level, and over 65% of them are English Language Learners. Many do not have cell phones or any technology at home.
I teach small groups of students who are significantly below grade level in reading. They come to me lacking self-confidence in their abilities and knowing that they lag behind their peers. Many have transient backgrounds. Some do not share a common language with their parents. They have not been raised by parents who are able to read to them or sit and do homework with them. They are middle school aged, and I need to help them now.
