Literacy is fundamental. At my high-need urban school there are already many obstacles for the students to overcome, and reading issues are one of the hardest problems to tackle. I am currently teaching a class of 9th through 12th graders who are struggling greatly with literacy. They are reading far below grade level and are therefore falling behind in most, if not all, of their classes.
