My students are energetic and eager to learn, but they need help with directing their energy into the proper channels. Ninety-nine percent of our students live below the poverty level and live in either housing projects or houses that are, simply put, shocking to a person raised in the middle class. For many of my students, school is their only stable, predictable environment, and I am the constant adult in their lives. Our principal works hard to develop relationships with the families in our neighborhood, and he believes in using our school's budget to hire committed, talented teachers. Because our students benefit most by being surrounded by a nurturing staff, our school runs out of money before teachers can supply their classrooms with needed reading, math, science, and general materials.
