I teach in an urban area that is rich with diversity. Within that population I teach a substantially separate autistic classroom. Each one of my students is sweet and loving in their own ways. The wonderful thing about working with students on the autism spectrum is that they each have unlocked potential. It is our job as educators to find the keys to unlock this potential and turn it into academic progress and functional communication. I am amazed everyday at how they learn and come to conclusions in their own special ways. My students benefit from learning in unique hands on experiences. They benefit from structure, routine and visual representations of concepts.
We are lucky to be in a school that has a great community of educators and therapists. We all work together to provide our students with a learning environment that is safe and nourishing to their own individual educational journeys.
