My students are in 4th grade in a large metropolitan school district. My classroom is about 90% low income, in a school that is on it's way to being one of the best in the city.
The students in my class love to read! Read to self is one of their most favorite times of the day. When we split into leveled reading groups they are always so excited to receive their new books to read for group. They race with each other to see who can finish the book first, (with understanding). They have become very successful at identifying character traits and finding text evidence to match, as well as mastering other comprehension strategies as well.
