My biology students are 10th graders at a public STEM high school in a large urban district in Washington State. 73% of the students attending the school receive free or reduced lunch and 97% of the students identify as students of color. The high school is an option school, meaning students and their families have made the ambitious leap in their education by selecting to attend a school which may not be their "neighborhood" school.
Students enrolled in my biology classes have self-selected into the Engineering and Design pathway at my school. Many of the students aspire to go on to become engineers, construction managers, and computer scientists. Others wish to become doctors, veterinarians, musicians, and graphic designers. Regardless of their goals, all of my students have big dreams and the ability to achieve great things. They comprise a group of talented, hardworking individuals who know what they want and are actively working to achieve it.
