Several of my students last year and my incoming student group are low readers and struggling writers. Many of them do not have access to print materials out of the classroom and as a result they need to have a rich print environment that includes fiction and non-fiction texts. Access to these materials can help them to bridge the learning gap in reading comprehension and improve their ability to take real world information an put it into essay writing format. My hope is that the writing materials requested will assist students in the classroom by helping them learn and understand practical application that in turn will build real world potential.
These activities will be set up as stations for the students to use in a teacher led group, with their peers and/or independently. I also plan to utilize these in social studies stations to help build relevant knowledge while still building reading and writing skills. Donating to this project will help struggling readers have access to evidenced based materials that introduce them to past people in our history including the Native Americans. The box set that was requested will provide reading passages and writing prompts to assist students in transferring text to writing.
The social studies materials in the cart correlate specifically with the learning content but, help bridge social studies to writing. The other materials will be used for small group reading activities and whole group writing activities.
