My fourth graders love funny books! For me, there is nothing more rewarding than hearing students laugh out loud as they read--a sure sign of COMPREHENSION!! That kind of joyful reading is contagious, and soon every kid in the class wants to find out for themselves what is SO funny. That's the kind of peer pressure I like! The Aldo Zelnick series is based in Fort Collins, Colorado and features familiar Colorado sights and experiences. My school is in Denver, so the students would love to share in experiencing Aldo's fort at the base of a Colorado blue spruce, his visit to Rocky Mountain National Park to watch bugling elk, and his attempts to learn to ski in Steamboat Springs. Aldo is described by author Karla Oceanak as a "chubby, curly-headed, athletically-challenged, artistic 10-year-old who'd rather fill his sketchbook with cartoons and eat bacon than embark on more stereotypical outdoor Colorado adventures." Who can't find something there to identify with?
