My students are amazing, capable and inspired third graders who happen to live in an impoverished area of California that is riddled with drugs, crime and unemployment. I want to offer them an educational experience in our classroom where, for those amazing seven hours they are with me, they can focus on academics and not the periphery. I firmly believe, with the right organizational tools and structure in place to get them started, these kiddos CAN and WILL rise up to grade level work I know they are capable of. I also believe these students can rise up as high as any student anywhere and I am trying to provide the kind of environment and educational instruction, so that this kind of learning can start happening. If a student can spend less time shuffling papers and losing focus, they can spend more time being focused on the academic side of class!
