My classroom has students that have all been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder which hinders their cognitive, developmental and communicative abilities. These students are in a substantially separate setting that gives them the chance to receive a special education, 1:1 learning and much differentiated instruction to meet their needs. The students range around 3 years old and many have just been diagnosed. Their families are struggling with the diagnosis and as teachers we are trying very hard to transition both parents and students in to a new routine, schedule, and way of living that will benefit their child. Many children with autism have difficulty communicating their wants and needs and emotions. I work in a public school in a low income area that does not get much funding for materials or resources that these students need to be successful. Let's work together to give these kids their voice so that they can more easily communicate their everyday needs!
