90 % of our student body is economically disadvantaged. Most come to school without breakfast or simple school supplies. Since their life outside of school is hard, I want my class to be a safe haven. The most important thing for me to accomplish is to gain their trust. Once I have that, they are willing to go to the moon and back for me. We have a higher than average drop out rate, simply due to the population we serve, but I always tell my students that it is not an option. If I can gain their trust, they come to class and put effort in to their work. They know that I care and will do whatever I can for them. Sadly, most don't get that attention when they leave my classroom.
