I'm requesting the book What Matters to provide my students engaging first-hand accounts of personal, real-world stories by teens for teens. The lessons learned and experienced by other teens in this book will mirror hope to each of my students as they contemplate the question, "Is the purpose of life a life of purpose?"
The book is divvied up into the following sections: What Matters, Challenging Matters, Family Matters, World Matters, Life Matters, I Matter, Heroes Matter, Younger Matters, and Moments Matter. I will incorporate reading pieces from two different sections of the book each nine weeks. Having a class set of these books will allow my students to connect with other teens who have had some of the same struggles they are experiencing. By making these connections, my students will then write inspirational personal narratives that they will present to their peers. By the end of the school year, I will teach my students different structures of poems so that they can write empowering poems that reveal their feelings, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. They will then participate in a Poetry Performance Project. These types of writing activities will be made possible only through the gift of a class set of this book.
The pieces within this book will show my students how they, at times, are closing their own doors to life lessons and opportunities before they fully walk through them. They will be encouraged to dream and to set life goals. They will learn that they matter, and they will then be able to walk with more confidence and belief in self towards fulfilling a life of purpose.
