My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them are being raised in single parent homes or by a grandparent. They began each school year with many needs such as school uniforms, backpacks, and specific tools for each class. Many of my students have difficulty either purchasing these supplies or finding transportation to get the supplies. This difficulty creates a culture in the classroom that the tools for success are not necessary to have in class. My students do not create this perception because they don't have the desire to learn, rather they do not want to show their inability to retrieve the tools for success in front of their peers. Once this culture is established in the classroom it becomes more difficult to get a class as a whole excited about their learning experience. My goal as a teacher is to provide a quality education for ALL students. This goal becomes much more attainable when all students have the tools and confidence they need for success in class.
