My school is a K-5 school and is comprised of mainly middle-income families, however, this is why it is often very difficult for the students that I teach. They often have difficulty keeping up in class and come in less prepared than their counterparts. My students are struggling 1st grade readers who score below the 25th%ile on various reading assessments. They are often frustrated by their classroom work, suffer from low self-esteem, and have very little home support. They typically enjoy our small reading groups because it gives them a chance to feel successful, since I meet them at their current level and not their grade level. Students enjoy the books that we read and enjoy the hands-on centers that I use when I have to progress monitor other students. This is why I feel they will enjoy using the iPad. It is a multi-functional learning tool and will allow them an opportunity to interact with a device that they do not have at home.
