My school is a Spanish immersion school located in the heart of a bustling downtown. The student body is wonderfully diverse, made up of children of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. About half the students are native English speakers and half are native Spanish speakers, so everyone is learning a second language, and they all help each other learn. Over 80% of the children qualify for free and reduced lunch, but they all come from families who truly care about their children's education and want what's best for them. My students are curious, hard-working, funny, creative, resourceful, resilient, and smart. They may not have had school experience before kindergarten. Their parents may be new to the country. They may live in dangerous neighborhoods. They may not get enough to eat. They may share a bedroom with five other people. I strive to create a classroom environment that is welcoming, safe, comfortable, and fun for all of my little learners.
