The 22 students in my third grade classroom are eager to learn and become fluent readers. They are all bilingual students who are in a transitional bilingual program. For many of them, this is their first year in a total English immersion class. For many of them, this is their first year reading English. Some of my students receive educational support at home, but many others do not because their parents do not speak English, are busy with work, or have limited education. Some of the students practice reading aloud at home every night, and I can see improvements in their reading fluency while others do not have a quiet place to listen to themselves practice fluency and thus do not make significant improvements. However, I know all of my boys and girls want to become fluent readers so they can become better readers, have an expansive English vocabulary and have an opportunity to succeed in school.
