My students come from a predominantly rural, agricultural setting. Hunting, fishing, farming, and firefighting - while noble pursuits - are the extent of many of my students' experiences. Many have never had the opportunity to see, or experience, that they have potential and possibilities that lie outside the typical jobs and lifestyles within Upstate South Carolina. Most students settle on continuing a pattern of poverty grounded in an outlook of complacency. Our school was built in the 1950's and has been added on to numerous times. Our facilities, while adequate, consistently fall short of the standards set by other schools in our county and region. Our school is attempting to make gains in the area of reading literacy but access to recent, relevant, and engaging novels is very inadequate.
