I serve two schools as the gifted/talented coordinator. The schools are both Title One schools and are a very diverse population, with some upper class students and many lower class students. The populations are diverse, with many English Language Learning students. My students reside in migrant communities, housing developments and farms. Many have never seen the ocean and spend their free time hunting and fishing. They recognize worth in knowledge, but often do not have the background experiences to comprehend technology. The students I serve are in grades K-5. I also am in the process of setting up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) labs to help students use children's engineering to understand that they can incorporate their knowledge into practical use. The students need to know that there are many opportunities in science, math, technology and engineering and that the world holds jobs other than being a service provider. I hope you will help me to open up their world and truly turn their "mirrors into windows."
