I teach reading to children of Yupik Alaska Native descent in a remote bush village in Alaska. My 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students are English Language Learners, which affects all their education, especially reading. This area of Alaska is also one of the lowest socio-economic (high-poverty) regions in the country and our school library contains a narrow selection of contemporary young adult literature. I would like my students to use Kindle Ereaders to improve their reading skills, which will help them advance in all their other subjects as well. Using Ereaders would impact the education of my students on many different levels and in so many positive ways. Putting Kindle Paperwhite Ereaders into the hands of my students would be akin to opening up a massive world of literature for them essentially giving them their very own library to explore. We could study multiple novels and non-fiction books simultaneously thus keeping their attention on what reading can do for an individual.
