Transitional kindergarten is a fairly new grade level in California. Our students are four years old and will all turn five between September and December. For most of my students this is their first experience in school. My students come from a variety of backgrounds with very different needs. Twenty percent of my students don't speak English as a first language. These students need the opportunity to hear and practice language in order to become fluent. Some are already reading and writing while others are still practicing holding a pencil. While their needs may be very different their quest for knowledge is the same. They are eager to explore new ideas and practice their skills.
