I am applying for a grant to cover the cost of books and supplies for my Newcomer ESOL students in ninth grade. The project is to focus on improved literacy for a public inner city school. Many of the students that attend inner city schools do not have personal libraries in their own homes. It is this educator's purpose to provide a print rich environment for high risk students of critical age to acquire a strong literate background.
Research has proved that the love of reading is acquired by modeling reading in action and by providing an environment of books that contain both elaborate language and rich vocabulary which with daily and continued use ensues increased academic achievement in a wide range of content based instruction.
My students need nonfiction, leveled books for independent reading and guided reading.
