The students in our school are challenged by a host of economic and social factors. About 98% of them are English Language Learners. Their parents usually have minimal formal education and have low-income jobs. Most of my first grade students love being at school when the classroom is managed effectively. What is key is that the classroom experience is tailored to each student's individual needs. A one-size-fits-all, just-follow-the-textbook approach is death to the first grade classroom. A combination of ongoing assessments and teacher observation must be used to see which student needs what. Then activities must be tailored to the small groups that naturally form based on skill level. I work hard to keep my classroom a constantly moving, dynamic environment. All kinds of tools help me to achieve this effect. Computers and laptops are a key element.
