My students this year are some of the most gritty, kind, deserving students I've ever taught, and they are also facing some of the most intense academic challenges of any group of students I've taught. The class that needs these computers is composed of 13 6th grade students who are all non-readers or emerging readers. Half are brand new to the U.S. and therefore new to English, while the other half are unique, developing learners who face myriad academic and behavioral challenges every day. The latter have made it through their entire elementary career without ever having been taught to read, which is, bottom line, unacceptable.
