I am a high school English teacher at a very small rural school in Oklahoma. I serve a variety of students in my classroom including English as a Second Language, migrant, and special education students. I also teach alternative education and credit recovery students. I currently serve approximately 80 students. Many of my students (especially in the alternative education program) are troubled, low socio-economic students that are at risk of dropping out of high school. These students have a variety of personal and social issues including but not limited to drug and alcohol abuse, victims of abuse, trouble with the law, and several are teen parents. A majority of our students live in single parent homes or are living with relatives. Our school uses a variety of teacher directed, online and self paced programs to assist students in reaching their goal of receiving a high school diploma.
