My students are the ones who struggle the most. They all have increasing difficulties within their language skills - skills that they need to have in order to be successful in school. Most of my students struggle to read, write and understand and use language in the way that our schools require. As a special education provider, 100% of my students receive some type of special education services.
Even though my students face more challenges than the average student, they are a truly hard working bunch. They enjoy coming to school everyday, and although it often takes them twice as long to learn specific concepts, they work tirelessly to do so. They have classroom teachers that work overtime and many special education providers that enable them to be the best students they can be.
Our school is located in East Harlem, NY and has a very high poverty rate. Our students come from many different backgrounds - foster care, homeless shelters...etc. Often, the only language stimulation they receive throughout the day is within our school building.
