These materials will make a difference to 9-12 public school students. Reading supports student's social, emotional and mental well-being as well as impacting their academic achievements. Giving our young men books that authentically engage them in reading is an investment in our future. We want all of our students to love reading, but according to the data, adolescent boys disengage from reading. Reading teaches empathy, background knowledge, critical thinking, and lifelong curiosity. During and after pandemic learning, we want all of our students to read materials that align with Nevada Academic Content Standards. Hillbilly Elegy is nonfiction that shows research, balanced claims and counterclaims, and an awareness of audience, purpose, and task. This book serves as a mentor text for teaching NVACS.
